Financial Wellness Expert for Lawyers
Jessica Medina is a lawyer turned Accredited Financial Counselor on a mission to help attorneys create the financial freedom they need to do big things. She graduated from Columbia Law School in 2004 as a single mom of twins with over $200,000 in student loans and went straight to work at a large D.C. firm.
After eight years she switched roles and became Senior Counsel at the Division of Enforcement at the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.
She left the government to work in an area of the financial industry outside of the securities world and now teaches other lawyers how to use their money to finance their dream lives.
Yours was the best session of the retreat and it’s so helpful to hear from someone who has been exactly in our shoes...I wanted to keep in touch and say THANK YOU! Your session was incredibly helpful and informative. Summer Associate

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s your speaking fee?
My 2025 standard speaking fee is $4,000 for a one-hour virtual workshop. Any in-person engagement will also require reasonable travel expenses to be covered. If you’re not sure whether this fits in your programming budget, schedule an Exploratory Call and let’s discuss.
Are your presentations eligible for CLE credit?
My webinars are eligible for CLE credit in most jurisdictions, and we can usually revise materials to make sure they meet CLE requirements. Any CLE approval or processing is handled by the host (not Jessica Medina LLC) but I’m more than willing to work with your team to get CLE credit approved.
Do you provide additional materials beyond the live presentation?
All presentations are accompanied by participant worksheet(s) to cement learning and provide actionable next steps. In some cases, full presentation slides may be provided.
Are there any finance topics you do not cover?
As an Accredited Financial Counselor I educate attorneys on all matters of financial topics. That being said, I do not give investment, insurance, or tax advice and instead leave those topics to the appropriately licensed professionals. I do co-present with other financial professionals if these are topics of interest.
I’d love to offer a financial wellness program to my organization, can you help me draft some language to persuade the key stakeholders that this is a good idea?
Absolutely! Putting together excellent trainings is hard enough, but professional development departments must also sell those programs as a worthy line-item in the organization’s budget. Below is some draft language you can adjust to help get approval for my programs. [This is crafted for a law firm, but the language can be easily adjusted to speak to a bar association or other legal organization.]

Financial wellness is getting more and more attention and many law firms are now looking to provide programming that touches on this important topic. It’s no wonder given a 2024 ABA study found financial stress and anxiety plague two-thirds of young lawyers. As firms continue to support the whole individual, it's becoming apparent that financial wellness is a key component of emotional and mental health, and both the lawyers and the staff are looking to their firms for resources.
I’d like to explore working with a dynamic speaker who offers personal finance programming for lawyers and law firm professionals. Jessica Medina is a lawyer turned Accredited Financial Counselor bringing an infectious energy and unbiased perspective to personal finance.
She worked as an attorney at a large D.C. law firm and then the SEC and now offers personal finance workshops for law schools, law firms, bar associations, and legal organizations who want to increase the financial literacy and wellness of all lawyers. You can see more about her speaking engagements here: https://www.jessicamedinallc.com/speaking
Here's a short list of some of the programs she's done for other firms:
(1) SMART Money Moves: A Framework for Financial Wellness
Audience: All firm personnel (attorneys, legal professionals, and business professionals)
(2) Mind Your Money...Mindset
Audience: All firm personnel
(3) Balancing the New Lawyer Budget: A Values Based Approach to a Balanced Life
Audience: Summer Associates (live workshop is ideal for building camaraderie and we cover managing money in their 3L year)
(4) Financial Wellness 101: Balancing the New Lawyer Budget
Audience: First Year/New Lateral Associates (workshop includes a breakdown of their starting salary)
(5) Managing Your Student Loans
Audience: All firm personnel (this workshop is ideal at 75-90 minutes given all the questions that usually come up!)
(6) Financial Wellness for the First Generation Lawyer
Audience: All lawyers who may be the first lawyer or professional in their family (though the topics covered may be helpful to a general audience!)
In addition to providing practical and strategic frameworks for approaching personal finances, Jessica's programs also highlight the financial wellness services and benefits already being offered at the firm. Her programs not only add awareness of existing firm benefits and can increase utilization rates, but also help attendees understand how to use them so they can achieve more financial security and overall wellness.
The firms who have hired Jessica for these workshops have gotten great feedback from attendees, and many remark that it's particularly nice to hear these things from someone who's actually practiced law in a similar environment. Here's what one AmLaw50 firm had to say about working with her recently:
I found working with Jessica to be an extremely easy process where she was super responsive and worked to accommodate our firm's specific needs. Overall, Jessica made the program planning process easy and streamlined, showing it's the smart choice to engage with her and collaborate on programming.
This program helped [the associates] to consider financial decisions and impacts that they may face as their own personal financial journey goes through changes just like their career. Many found this programming to be very approachable and not overwhelming, which many financial conversations can be!
Note: These are NOT presentations on investment strategies, insurance coverages, or retirement account options. Those topics are often covered by financial services firms (or 401k plan administrators) and though they explain the tools available, they do not necessarily help attorneys understand how to make better financial decisions for their lives. Instead, Jessica focuses on providing attorneys and law firm staff with the tools to navigate their unique financial landscape, from managing large student loan debt to planning for partnership and beyond.
I’d love to discuss adding a financial wellness program to our training curriculum.
What if I have an idea for a presentation, but it’s not listed above?
Set up an Exploratory Call and let’s discuss what you have in mind. There are so many financial wellness topics and as a lawyer turned Accredited Financial Counselor I can cover a variety of topics relevant to attorneys.
